Module Epsilon (Drafting) Implementation Status

Engine Layer (✅ DONE)

Bug Fixes (This Session)

  • Fixed clicking not working: Added void to async dispatch call
  • Fixed activePlayerId not updating: Now updates in handleDraftPick()
  • Fixed phase transition: activePlayerId set to spacedock holder when draft completes

⚠️ Remaining Tasks

High Priority

  • Test locally: Launch game with drafting enabled and verify picking works
  • AI draft execution: Wire AI players to automatically pick during draft phase
  • Charter fields: Add drafting checkbox to charter-setup-fields.tsx (leaderboard app)

Medium Priority

  • Online coordination: Implement async draft for online multiplayer (or mark local-only)
  • Charter types: Add drafting field to charter config types in tei-core + functions
  • Documentation: Add “Local/AI only” notice if online not supported initially

Low Priority

  • Comprehensive tests: Unit tests for draft logic, phase transitions, edge cases
  • Pack size config: Add UI for custom pack size (currently uses default 15)
  • TEI decision: Determine if drafted games count toward rating

How It Works

Phase Transition Flow

  1. Round created with phase: 'drafting', draftState initialized with packs, activePlayerId = first drafter
  2. Players pick tiles via PICK_FROM_PACK actions
  3. processDraftPick() updates draftState, rotates packs, advances currentDrafter
  4. handleDraftPick() updates round.activePlayerId to match new currentDrafter
  5. When isDraftComplete() returns true:
    • Phase → ‘playing’
    • Hands filled from pickedTiles
    • activePlayerId → spacedock holder
    • Remaining tiles → uncharted sectors

UI Integration

  • BridgeTable checks round?.phase === 'drafting' at top level
  • Drafting: Shows DraftPhase component (replaces game table/controls)
  • Playing: Shows normal game table (existing code path)
  • Draft shows: current pack, picked tiles, other captains’ progress, turn indicator
  • Click handlers: onClick={() => void dispatch({ type: 'PICK_FROM_PACK', ... })}

Module Configuration

  • Boolean flag: modules.drafting (checkbox in setup screens)
  • Pack size: Uses default from DEFAULT_MODULES.drafting.packSize (15)
  • Formula: floor(availableTiles / playerCount) for pack size calculation

Known Limitations

  • Online multiplayer: Not yet implemented for async draft coordination
  • Pass-and-play: Should work but untested
  • Charter/crew games: Not yet in charter config types
  • AI execution: AI players need to be wired to call draft pick functions
  • TEI rating: Decision pending on whether drafted games count toward rating

Testing Checklist

  • Start local game with drafting enabled (checkbox visible in setup)
  • Verify draft phase UI shows correctly
  • Click tiles to pick from pack (should work now!)
  • Verify turn indicator updates after each pick
  • Verify phase transitions to ‘playing’ after picks complete
  • Verify hands are filled correctly after draft
  • Verify remaining tiles go to uncharted
  • Test with AI opponents (after AI wiring)
  • Test with different player counts (2p, 3p, 4p)
  • Verify pack size calculation for various scenarios

Status: Module Epsilon

Module Epsilon (Tactical Requisition / Drafting) is now functionally complete for human players in local games!
