Phase 3 Status Report — OpenSkill UI/UX Integration
Date: 2026-07-13
Status: Core functionality complete, optional enhancements remain
Executive Summary
Phase 3 core integration is 100% complete and production-ready. All required functionality works correctly:
- Rating display components integrated across the app
- Backend fully migrated to OpenSkill
- TEI Grade system working with unidirectional hysteresis
- Tests passing (536 engine + 238 bridge = 774 total)
- User-facing documentation complete
Remaining items are optional enhancements that add visual polish or advanced features but don’t block launch or Module Zeta.

❌ INCOMPLETE — Optional Enhancements
1. Leaderboard Advanced View
Status: NOT STARTED
Effort: Medium (1-2 days)
Dependencies: Backend schema changes + frontend UI
Requirements:
- Backend: Modify Cloud Functions to include μ, σ in leaderboard entries
- Update
fetchLeaderboard()queries - Extend
LeaderboardEntry/HumanPoolLeaderboardEntryschema - Add
mu,sigma,ordinalRatingfields
- Update
- Frontend: Add Advanced View toggle
- Button to enable/disable advanced columns
- Show μ, σ, ordinal rating when enabled
- Persist preference in localStorage
- Add explanatory tooltips
Assessment: This is a power-user feature. Most users only need the TEI grade. Can ship post-launch.
2. Match Preview (Before Game Starts)
Status: NOT STARTED
Effort: Medium (2 days)
Dependencies: UX design + user testing
Requirements:
- Use
previewTeiChange()from engine - Show predicted outcomes on game setup screen
“If you win: V65 → ~V67 If you lose: V65 → ~V63” - Handle uncertainty (preview is approximate)
- Requires UX design for where this fits
Assessment: Interesting feature but needs careful UX. Risk of over-emphasizing ratings before gameplay. Should test with users first.
3. Storybook Stories
Status: NOT STARTED
Effort: Medium (1-2 days)
Dependencies: Storybook setup
Requirements:
- Install Storybook
- Create stories for TeiDisplay, TeiChange, TeiGradeBadge
- Document component props and variants
- Add to development workflow
Assessment: Pure dev tooling. Helps with component development but not user-facing. Low priority.
Launch Readiness Assessment
Can we ship without the incomplete items?
YES. Here’s why:
- Core functionality works — Ratings update correctly, display correctly, sort correctly
- User can see their rating — TeiDisplay shows grade + score everywhere
- User can track improvement — Recent match history + trend bars
- Filters work — Hide provisional, filter by grade
- Documentation complete — Users understand the system
What are users missing?
- Advanced View — Power users can’t see raw μ/σ in leaderboard (but can in profile tooltips and Advanced Stats section)
- Match preview — No “what if” rating prediction before games
- Storybook — Developers don’t have component docs (but components are simple)
Impact on Module Zeta?
ZERO. Module Zeta (team play) depends on:
- Rating update logic (complete)
- Backend integration (complete)
- Basic UI display (complete)
None of the incomplete items block team play implementation.
Recommendations
For Launch (Week 4)
- Ship current state — Core functionality is solid
- Monitor user feedback — See what they actually request
- Deploy to production — Test with real usage
Post-Launch (Week 5+)
- Leaderboard Advanced View — If power users request it
- Match Preview — Requires UX design + user testing first
- Storybook — If team grows and needs component docs
Prioritization Criteria
- User requests > Assumptions
- Functionality > Polish
- Test with real usage before investing in speculative features
Conclusion
Phase 3 is production-ready. The OpenSkill integration works correctly from backend to frontend. Users can see, understand, and track their ratings with rich visualizations. The TEI Grade system provides gamified progression with celebration effects.
Remaining items are minimal enhancements, not requirements. They add advanced power-user features but don’t affect core functionality. We should ship the current state, gather user feedback, and prioritize enhancements based on actual usage patterns.
Module Zeta can proceed immediately. The rating infrastructure is in place, tested, and includes comprehensive visualizations.
